Overview
A remarkable collage using the day’s edition of the Asahi Shimbun newspaper and novels by popular science fiction writer Sakyo Komatsu, this performance was created as a companion piece to Chiten’s Modern Language. It is an experiment in considering the “now” of Japan by intermixing the sci-fi vision of a far future and distant planets with the everyday time scale of yesterday, today and tomorrow.
Since the 2011 Fukushima disaster, Japan is looking anew at how it uses technology and its vision of the ideal society. This performance invites audiences to respond to the science fiction imagination of Komatsu, who wrote between the 1960’s and 1980’s. Half of the performance is comprised of the pages from the day’s edition of a newspaper, which changes the content of the play each day it is performed.
